Black Racer, name for several related swift, slender snakes, especially those of the genus Coluber. All of the racers are nonpoisonous, non-constricting, day-active snakes. The black racer, C. constrictor, is easily confused with the constricting black rat snake, or pilot black snake (Elaphe obsoleta), which may account for its misleading Latin name. An aggressive snake, it will bite repeatedly if cornered; however, it can be tamed.

The Black Racer is a non poisonous snake of the eastern United States. It can reach a length of 5 to 6 ft. long with the black, dull scales .
It travels swiftly and can climb small trees and bushes to feed on birds and their eggs. The black racer also dines on frogs, and other snakes. An aggressive snake, it will bite repeatedly if cornered; however, it can be tamed. The young, hatched from eggs, are pale gray, spotted with brown. A snake sometimes confused with the black racer is the pilot black snake or mountain black snake of the North Eastern United States.
Unlike the black racer, it is a constrictor preying on rats and other small animals. It has shiny, slightly keeled scales and reaches a length of 8 ft..

(Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta) is a species of Rat Snake. The snake prefers heavily wooded areas and they are known for having excellent climbing ability, including the ability to climb the trunk of large mature trees without the aid of branches.
Though they do consume mice and rats, the Black Rat Snakes also willingly consume chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and bird eggs. In captivity, they have a reputation for being "vacuum cleaners," and will eat almost anything placed in front of them.
Black rat snakes are quite large and are known to reach up to eight (8) feet in length. The record length for a Black Rat Snake is 101 inches, making it (officially) the largest snake in North America. Mating occurs from April to June and in the fall producing clutches of 5 - 30 eggs which are laid from June to August in rotting logs, leaf litter or under rocks. The eggs are smooth and elongated and are usually 1.5 - 2 inches in size. The young hatch 7 - 15 weeks later in August through October and are usually 11 - 16 inches long.
